In many ways, it was born by accident. But what began as an unexpected conversation soon became something far more personal, purposeful, and enduring.
The Origin: A Convergence of Need and Technology
In 2017, casual conversation with physician friends changed my trajectory. They mentioned the growing need for medical malpractice protection. At the time, my firm, JA Assure, was focused on the specialist world of jewellers and money changers. We understood niche risk, but I was searching for a sector where technology could create true scale and meaningful long-term impact.
Healthcare stood apart, not just as a market, but because of what was at stake. This was not about protecting physical assets. It was about protecting professionals who carry the weight of human lives, and the patients who place their trust in them.
With the backing of an enterprising team at Chubb, especially Fahmin and the senior leaders who saw the vision, we set out to solve a glaring problem. At that time, there was no digital platform for medical indemnity. Everything was manual. Proposal forms were completed by hand. Agents travelled from clinic to clinic. Quotes took weeks. For a busy doctor, the process was fragmented and burdensome.
The Skeptics and the Naked Launch
Many doubted we would succeed. Critics argued that doctors would never purchase indemnity online, believing that personal relationships with generalist agents were the only way.
We saw it differently. Medical indemnity is not a product to be sold casually. When a matter involves bodily injury or professional reputation, it requires specialist depth, not a generalist handshake. We also knew that a generalist broker would never have the concentration or scale to influence insurers meaningfully or advocate deeply for the medical profession.
To prove our worth, we did something uncomfortable: we launched naked. We put our pricing, coverage, and wording online for the entire market to see. We invited the market to judge us openly. That transparency forced us to build with honesty and conviction. As doctors began to compare us objectively, they did not just choose DoctorShield. They helped us raise the standard for the entire industry.
The Pandemic: Proving the Human Heart
When Covid arrived, the world stopped, but the need for protection did not. With face to face meetings no longer possible, doctors turned to DoctorShield in record numbers. They discovered that comprehensive protection could be secured in minutes.
But the true test was not speed. It was support. During those difficult days, our clients did not just want a policy. They wanted a human voice. They wanted to know that real people stood behind the platform. Our team answered that need, handling a mountain of queries with care, patience, and warmth, day after day. We proved that digital does not mean impersonal.
A Personal Obsession: From Malpractice to Patient Safety
For over two decades in insurance, I have seen families at their most vulnerable. Often, because of my role, I am the first person a victim or a professional speaks to in a moment of crisis, sometimes even before their own family.
That experience changed me. It stopped being about transactions and became about responsibility. In medical indemnity, the pain is rarely one dimensional. There is a doctor carrying the stress of a complaint, and a patient carrying the pain of a poor outcome. That is why I believe this should not be viewed merely as malpractice insurance, but as patient safety insurance.
That belief defines our culture. We do not defend every matter blindly or prolong disputes unnecessarily. We believe in mitigation, fair resolution, and restoring trust where possible. Prolonged conflict serves no one. It deepens mistrust and leaves lasting scars. Our role is to help resolve, reduce harm, and allow everyone, doctor and patient alike, to move forward with dignity.
The Future: Protection with Humanity
Today, DoctorShield continues to grow. While technology is an engine of our efficiency, it is not our heart. We are a human company.
None of this would have been possible without the strength, belief, and commitment of the people behind it. I am deeply grateful to Ramesh Bramanathan, Azlinda Aziz, Venky, VJ, Siva, Yuges, Wai Wai, Darshveni, Kris, Roshila and the entire JA Assure Team for helping us come this far in such a short time. Every milestone belongs to this team.
We are equally grateful for the trust placed in us by doctors, medical associations, partners, and stakeholders who have grown with us over the years. Every policy entrusted to us carries a professional life, a reputation, and a duty of care behind it. We never forget that.
DoctorShield may have begun as an accidental idea, but it has become a deliberate promise. A promise to stand beside healthcare professionals with clarity when things are uncertain, with compassion when things are difficult, and with conviction when it matters most.
This is the work. This is the purpose. This is DoctorShield.
